Huge increase in Tesco home delivery service with 2,500 new drivers and 200 vans

QuoteTesco has said it is expanding its home delivery and click & collect capacity to around 780,000 slots this week.

That represents an increase of 120,000 from two weeks ago, with another 100,000 increase planned.

Following a recruitment drive, the store said it's added more than 200 new vans and hired another 2,500 drivers and 5,000 store pickers to help handle increased demand following lockdown.

7,500 more potential virus victims ?

To be honest I feel more at risk when around other drivers and pickers than when I am out on the road on my own.  Some of them are not as observant of the social distancing rules as I would like.

Quote“There do appear to be two different strains,” says Ravinder Kanda at Oxford Brookes University in the UK. “[The L-type] might be more aggressive in transmitting itself, but we have no idea yet how these underlying genetic changes will relate to disease severity,”

QuoteWhy costs have gone up
Tesco expects its payroll expense to balloon by up to £405 million ($500.9 million), depending on how long lockdown measures are in place. The company is paying employees who are sick with coronavirus or in isolation, and has placed all workers who are over 70, vulnerable or pregnant, on 12 weeks of paid leave.

Can't be many over 70 who are pregnant.

The following two were news to me.

QuoteTesco staff may help customers with where to park their car on arrival, to help limit the number of people in-store.

Customers may be asked to stay in the car to queue, with staff letting people know when they can come in store.

Coronavirus: 'I never thought I'd be so proud to sell bread and butter'

QuoteLaura McLellan says she has never felt so humbled as when she and her team of checkout operators were told they were key workers.

The Tesco supermarket worker felt so proud that she wanted to go back in time to tell her school headmaster about the important job she was now doing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Tesco says it has been closely following the Government guidance and that staff and customer safety is their top priority.

Highlighting the guidance that face masks should be worn in enclosed places where social distancing isn't possible, it said it's implemented a range of social distancing measures in their stores to ensure everyone can maintain a safe distance.

It said staff have access to face masks, gloves and face visors if they choose to wear them.

Shielding Tesco employees not paid in full for months due to 'payroll error'

Combined, the two staff members estimate that together they are owed more than £2000 in entitled pay from January onward.

Quote"There's been so many hurdles over the last month and we've just been constantly stumbling," said Staff Member A.

The staff member said that they have raised the issue on numerous occasions with management since January, but that the issue remained unresolved throughout February and into March.

"They knew there was a problem, and I'm talking weeks ago, so surely by now it should have been rectified."
