Extra hours market

This extra hours market is proving to be very unfair. How many times a day must people check the app? Potentially  one person can select every bit of overtime. This is what's happening in our store, some don't get a look in. One staff.member is very upset. They have been a key player on the department. And now find they are unable to obtain any extra shifts. They are now after years of being loyal to company seeking alternative  employment. Its like a cut throat fight.

I know in my store 4 shifts got uploaded by the manager and all 4 shifts got taken by someone on 25 hours, so those on the department on less than 16 missed out.

Its very unfair and there should be a limit to how many shifts can be accepted within a certain time frame.

Get the mgr not to upload it but go to the member of staff, ask them if they want the ot and then put it into frog. Its not right but this was inevitable this was going to happen, especially with limited ot. We do it the old fashioned way. Sad that the office couldn't see this coming. Ps it will always be this way as there are always surprise visits going on when ot suddenly appears for that week.

nobody do overtime. problem solved :-X

EHM is my Tiktok app On it a good few times a day  :D

I have plenty of choice for O/T as I'm prepared to work in 5 departments between 7am-10pm Mon to Sat

the days in ours the shifts are all up for grabs, for nights they've asked the people who normally do them before putting them up (like they would of done with paper) - so ours are mainly upset that some can't get the overtime when there "isn't any" because the pets are being put down for it..

with it being on the app I wouldn't say its fair anyhow considering a lot of ours are older ones who can't work phones well.. so they get screwed out of the picking up.

You will have winners and losers. The old system management would have their favs or someone who needed o/t would get a lot of it. I would say I'm getting more o/t choice this time around than I did on the old system and it's on my terms. So EHM is working as intended and I am getting the benefit of it but yeah others might not be so lucky.

I have noticed that o/t that is 3 weeks in advance in tandem with 3 weeks notice of scheduled contract hours the manager has to come into WhatsApps comms and remind people of o/t that is available. So we never have had an issue where all the o/t is snapped up by one individual

I think the problem lies with individuals wanting set o/t hours within a specific department. The oldie thing could be a part of the problem but no hard data on that as I have seen a few of the young ones not bothering to check the app either  :)

The problem seems to be the people not the system.

The problem with people snapping up all the OT on one department will be resolved when schedule to workload rolls out very soon. Departments over hours will find colleagues scheduled to under hours departments and any OT on offer could well be across multiple departments.

However do believe USDAW should be raising the issue of staff having to look at work apps outside of their working hours as part of the pay negotiations. Especially if people are having to check apps (whilst not being paid) multiple times a day.....

that'd probably be because with the new system, if you want a break from one department and want to go elsewhere, your going to be pulled back to your own department at ANY chance.. because you still have to cover your primary department if your like Dotcom driver for example and want a break to go pickup the overtime on checkouts, you'll then get moved onto Driving cause no one wanted to pick up a shift..

it used to be a fight for overtime at ours, I had to message and go in on days off, asking if there was anything for that day, pretty much begging at one point... Now ? from our recent breakdown, only 34% of overtime shifts are being picked up... there's still 94 shifts that aren't being picked up cause no one wants them due to them now likely to move you.. so yes people can be the problem but the system is designed so they are going to be rather than working with them to be honest.

Yeah if I was a union rep or even a member of the union I would not be bringing that up as one of the reasons for a certain wage rise. Imagine coming up with the calculation and presenting it and keeping a straight face  ;D

Being semi-retired with a pension and fewer financial commitments I don't need OT as much as my younger colleagues so my practise is to not to volunteer for any OT until the day before the shift is due to give others first dibs.  I freely admit I like doing the odd OT shift as it helps structure my week and counts for brownie points if I need a favour in return sometime in the future.

I personally feel that working in another area of the store is good. It helps it feel more like a team. I have people who pick up checkout overtime that have a primary role in other areas. The general unwritten rule is that you don't turn down overtime in your primary role but pick up those exact same hours in another area. I have had managers say to me "but I was going to put a shift in then but you launched your overtime first" we then tend to work together on this.
As managers we need to deliver the whole shop. As a dot.com drives there is a limited pull of drivers. As for checkouts, with the odd exception the whole store is trained. There are times when a filled checkout shift is relaunched as it's the sensible option.

Meanwhile back in 2010 we had this just under a different name, all our management and team leaders went to be trained up on this, it was called overtime booking system then after going to all that effort it was just dropped for over a decade, it was rumoured millions were spent on it back then and basically the cost was written off. Oh and all of the very valid concerns raised about this extra hours market now were all raised back in 2010. Talk about going round in circles.

Do not let anyone tell you there is not a decent job and life beyond Tesco.

randomworker

Can't speak to that system back then as not employed at that time but this new system has been running in our store since June Last year and it works a treat. Love having total control over when I want to do overtime and Looking forward to the holiday booking to be added and then in total control.

Cheerleader

We have a store group chat and a  message is put in when shifts have been added and anyone currently working can leave the shop floor and look at it.

Another suggestion would be to tell the manager to inform EVERYONE to only take one or two (depending on how many have been put up) shifts on the first day they are posted so everyone can look.

I have 30+ years service and I can't remember this. Could it be that you were part of a group trial that did not work.
Extra hours is working. I have had a few complaints from colleagues but when I looked into it there was nothing much to complain about. One person claimed they never got the chance to pick up shifts but upon investigation they were not prepared to work beyond 12 noon and they was only one early shift that week and it was picked up by someone else as a single overtime shift.
Similar thing in another area, colleague only wanted up until 1700 and overtime shifts were in the evenings and had not been picked up by anyone. I had to ring round and try and fill after the 72 hours before shifts and ended up as having to do one shift myself.
We still do paper rota, no idea how we can manage without. I have had names put on paper rota but others pick up from extra hours. I have just briefed to say that the online booking takes precedence and if they want a shift but can't book via extra hours to see me of an off till colleague and we will book it in for them.

randomworker

I do wonder if working in another store for overtime will come into the app anytime soon. On paper it sounds like a good idea but then again it doesn't  ;D

Morris999

@Redshoes I remember the briefing for the online overtime booking system back then.
We were all trained on how it would work, then told to go brief all the colleagues in store and told it would be live in x amount of weeks, then nothing.

One of the biggest concerns we fed back then was the lack of online capability for colleagues.
Most colleagues still only had Nokias etc and not smart phones that's even if they had a mobile device, no one had a tablet and a lot of colleagues didn't own a PC either.

It could have been that they were realising it in England first as I know the store I worked in at the time was not on a trial for it!

penguin

We also fed back that not everyone had a mobile that could go online or a computer at home during the 2010 launch, we were told "coaches" would be going into stores to teach staff how to use said items, when I pointed out that was all well and good but did not solve the problem of people not owning a device in the first place the reply was classic Tesco "Once people are shown all the internet has to offer they will soon get themselves set up with a laptop and broadband so you need not worry"

Do not let anyone tell you there is not a decent job and life beyond Tesco.

Aislefloater

I'm a newbie, how do I get to the extra hours market in the first place?  ??? Thanks in advance!

I'm unable to book anything.  We all downloaded the app months ago but nothing ever comes up for OT or skills.
