Title: Obsessive customer
Post by: ProdavnicaTajni on 17-03-24, 08:49PM
There's a customer at our Tesco who seems to have developed a very disturbing/obsessive parasocial relationship with one of the other members of staff. We've already told the team leaders etc. Realistically, how seriously does Tesco take this? Will anything be done?

Report it to the police if its a concern.

Management or security should also approach the individual and ask them leave the employee alone as their actions are making them feel uncomfortable. Ultimately though if they ignore the hint it will need police action.

This is something that happened in my store many years ago, with a checkout operator having a customer come in every day and go to their checkout, making personal comments whilst being served.

The front end team were made aware, and each time another colleague would take over the checkout from the operator and serve the customer. No comments were made to the customer but duly noted if they asked for the operators whereabouts. In this case though it was an immature customer with a crush, who soon backed off.

I would advise that your colleague inform the manager and any security personnel you have, of their intention to inform the police and request cctv be monitored and kept of any unwanted interaction for future referral. Also ask for security to escort them to and from their vehicle in the store car park if they feel the need.

It's not just a case of banning them from the store, as that could inflame the situation and the person resorts to stalking them outside. Tesco have a duty of care policy, but they only have the responsibility to support and protect their colleagues from harm in the workplace.

I strongly advise that your colleague informs the management and the police, so they are all aware of the situation and the person involved. A report can the be compiled with any CCTV recording the store have retained.

Something like this happened in my store many years ago before the days of CCTV.

A man, who had been in bother with the police, took a dislike to a male colleague and would come in and purposefully try to provoke this colleague. He would verbally abuse the colleague and tell him he wanted him sacked. The colleague, who knew the man outside of work, was upset by this and was worried one day he would just snap and be instantly dismissed.

He informed management many times and asked about getting the man barred but the response was 'we can't do that. When he comes in, go through and wait in the warehouse until he's gone.'

The man was eventually jailed for another matter but this went on for months without any backup from management.

Hopefully this would not happen again as we do now have CCTV and different managers but it was a shameful snapshot of how badly colleagues were let down by bad management.

This would seem to be the ideal case for the colleague to be given a bodycam and carry a spit test.  What are the rules on which colleagues are given them?

Tesco is to drop the blue and yellow logo used to promote its Clubcard loyalty scheme – a rebrand that could cost millions of pounds – after losing an appeal against a ruling that it had copied a design by Lidl. serve them right.

Well - I've never visited Lidl and it has never occurred to me that the Tesco logo would/could be misinterpreted as comparing prices between the two.
It looks nothing like the Lidl logo. Farcical coming from a store which copied others' products.

New minimum wage comes into force on the 1st of April.  This will then be £11.55. As the new Tesco wage increase  doesn't come into effect till the 28th of April what's going to happen?  Are employees going to be paid less than the law degrees or we have if a temporary increase to match the minimum wage?

By law an employer does not have to increase the wage level until the next pay day after the minimum wage increase takes place. Therefore it is not breaking any laws.

Pay day should of been 29th, but since its a bank holiday we will be paid Thursday 28th March.

1st April is NMW increase, HOWEVER this DOESN'T APPLY to us, due to Tesco wanting to save £17m we will still be paid £11.02 up until April 28th, and then After then it will be £12.02, so we will be paid under NMW for a month.

correct we will be paid below minimum wage for that period but it is not breaking the law.

Actually, they've been hit in YOUR pocket, but hey ho, you carry on raging against the man if it makes you feel a bit better about supplying them with your labour.

We had something similar - a man with a crush kept coming in and looking for a young female colleague. Even knew her contracted schedule!

You won't believe this - but he actually got HIRED - despite being known to bother her, and she got moved out of the store to PFS 🤦🏼♀️
