Policy on CCTV monitoring of staff?

If CCTV is used for an investigation of a person (in this case, of multiple people), who can view the footage and when? We have a manager who has been collecting CCTV evidence for weeks, and has viewed it on his own and with another manager on multiple occasions- some staff members have witnessed this. I don't know what the policy is on this but does he have to have somebody present when he views this? It seems like he just looks at it when he likes.

You say it's for an investigation of colleagues?
It depends why he and others are viewing it? If it is a security issue  or against policies, then he and other managers can monitor it at any time!

If it's for productivity performance of colleagues, such as talking on shop floor, or watching/timing them working, then no!
CA's of any department have no right to view or  access the footage, Only managers (I'm unsure if the new Team Support colleagues now have this right?) CA's may view only during an investigation to create their defence.

Managers are allowed to view footage especially if its for an investigation.

As far as I'm aware, they have separate log ins for CCTV, so it logs who is reviewing, copying or deleting footage, if you do nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about.

Deleting?  That is surely a dodgy no, no whatever the circumstances.

As far as I'm aware you can only delete archived footage. So for example a Hub investigation for a "walk off" at self service from six months after investigation. You can look back for about 30 days but the saved footage has to be deleted.
What is looked at is monitored too. Your checkout manager will probably be on the system more than anyone else. A till investigation can often be easily explained by looking at cctv but on paper difficult to understand. A manager who is looking at things that they should not be using the cctv for will be spotted. In the digital age we live in everything is monitored and can be reviewed. There is a search history that can be reviewed and I assume that anything we spend time looking at is reviewed by the Hub team. You are also kicked out as a user if you don't sign in often enough. In my store it's me and the stock/admin manager that keeps a live sign in. The others need to get one of us to refresh accounts.

Deleting copies after an investigation has been completely exhausted including any and all appeal processes is one thing.  Deleting archive footage does not sound right no matter how old.

I come from a banking background where financial records have to be kept for at least six years and audit trails of all transactions are sacrosanct - You can "undo" or reverse a transaction but that actually keeps the original transaction on record along with the matching correction - something that is often conveniently ignored by TV dramas involving financial shenannigans.

This is Tesco we're talking about, the company behind the biggest profit overstatement in UK corporate history, they're not above lying to the stock market, they're certainly not above deleting incriminating cctv footage.

The footage is not deleted after 30 days, for an example I needed footage from an incident I was involved in, management were less than helpful as per usual and kept quoting the "30 day" on the system rubbish, however I did get the footage from CCTV over 12 months later from not just one angle but two different points of view. This was acquired through head office and they were quite helpful not fully co-operative but none the less helped. There was also separate incidents involving two different stores with a member of the public, CCTV was retrieved some 18 months after one store had footage the other didn't but it helped prosecute the person.
Till investigations or should I say accusations because that is what they usually end up as, for management to feel the need they have to check on CCTV as they are not the brightest when it comes to investigations using just the paperwork is just unbelievable. It does seem to occur frequently that a till was £30.00 down can you explain ? when 17 other people have used the same till on that day, my reply would be "you need to narrow it down and show where it has gone missing and at what time" as the paperwork would be showing ZERO ££ missing, I do believe this is a ploy to keep staff on their toes and also justification to try and use at a later date. Because people believe me when I say this will be used against you it gets dragged up and literally slapped across the face with everything including let's talks from 10 years previously that they get wrong when push comes to shove they always assume they are correct.
"A manager who is looking at things that they should not be using the cctv for will be spotted." Hmmm that's not true ! As you see managers watching on the guards lectern live CCTV totally against policy I believe, they also use the guards CCTV to look at previous footage again breaching policy if they wish to look at previous footage for good reason they should be signed in to their own account so as they can be held responsible for their OWN actions. If you don't sign in enough you get kicked out ?? really that is just asking for trouble a company wanting managers to sign in to CCTV maybe without reason or they will lose this privilege  >:D  >:D  >:D .
Why would you feel the need to have a live CCTV sign in ? Security and the Hub deal with the Live CCTV is it a new policy ????

So they keep over 12 months of footage from every camera in every store store in the entire company? 🤔

We only have 30 days of cctv footage in store. Beyond that I have never had to look.
CCTV footage for tills is very clear we have smart tills so can narrow it down to a single transaction and can clearly see errors. For example it's clearly notes stuck together or just simple operator errors.
When you have smart tills the money is weighed during every transaction so you can see if a £20 note was put in a £10 slot. Errors often occur when operator tells till exact amount was given but customer needs change. Investigations are for over £10 but if giving change of £15.21 when a £10 note has been handed over by a customer is crystal clear. This is very rare but it happens. It shows on the transaction report and on CCTV. There is no need to investigate multiple people.

As for the CCTV sign in. Managers need to sign in.
When we get a Hub investigation down it tells us to review the CCTV footage for the investigation.
We also need to view it for other things. It could be shop potential lifting and not colleague related. It could be an accident. The police have sometimes asked us to review CCTV for a missing person too.  There are many reasons.
If you are on the Hub system it does sign out people who have not signed in for a few weeks. We don't have security guards in my store and we never use the lectern.

No one has the ability at store level to delete anything, obviously have no clue about the hub same as at store level on the cctv computers you have no ability to save anything except by using the tools in the app nothing can be stored outside its all locked dowm.

From putting two and two together I think when told the footage was no longer available the automatic thought was that it was deleted. An application was made and the team outside of store were able to pull up footage so this reinforced the assumption that it was deleted in store.
There were numerous old systems in stores. Our old system allowed going back three months. With the Hub this only allows about 30 days but how long they can go back outside of store is a different issue. On the new or the old system you could only delete saved files, not actual footage.
