On nights,is there a specific time where you can and can't go for breaks? Some are being told that they CAN'T go between 4am and 5am due to it being "crucial hours" I've never heard this before in 10yrs of working nights.

Hammer10

When I worked nights I went actually all team went 1am to 1.30am then 4am to 4.30 am.did not cause any problems.

its actually up to your managers for your breaks, as long as it's not close to the start or ending of your shift they can have them anywhere, ours were always the choice of a 30 minute 11:30 to/or midnight to 12:30,  then 2:30 to 3:30 / 3:00 to 4:00, there was a bit of leeway for a while and some decided to take whenever or split to 3 30 minutes, now its set at 2, 45 minute breaks where the delivery always arrives... they changed it to avoid that though so just shows they haven't a clue...

if you are up your manager's a*** then you can go whenever, we have a few that don't have to follow the 45 minute one and instead go for break at 6:30am to 7am to do shopping, and as per usual, if you complain its "nothing is happening like that"  8-)

It is very normal to take breaks between 4 and 5am at many stores across the whole business. You need to stand up for yourself.

Sherwoodforest

It is upto the managers when you go,and varies by store, between 4-5 seems late for breaks compared to most stores I've worked in

When tesco pay me for my breaks, then managers can tell me when to take them. Until then, it's none of their fornicating business. >:D

ForCryingOutLoud

A manager makes operational decisions; that is why they are employed as managers. It is therefore within their remit to decide when their direct reports can & cannot go for breaks if they are able to justify the rationale behind these decisions.

I couldn't give a toss about, "needs of the business". I take my breaks when it suits me. Any manager who has a problem with that can ram his remit where the sun doesn't shine. ;)

Most at ours are, thats what im getting at though, it used to be perfectly fine now it's just more stressful to challenge it unless you are up their arse lol, if it wasn't for my medical stuff already allowing me different stuff i'd be taking what im on regardless as i find it better for me in general anyhow, when they can pay correctly every time i'll maybe look at listening to something they say :P

I don't get what's "crucial " between 4 and 5. They're saying we can have 4 till 4.30 or 4.30 till 5 but not 4 till 5. Sadly our managers motto is "if it ain't broke,break it"

Sharonc68

When I first started nights almost 13 years ago we could take our breaks as we liked then manager changed it to a hour 12.30 till 1.30 then 4 till 4.30 hate having to take a hour all at once used to do 3 half hour breaks.

Our guys on nights only get 2 x 30 minute breaks. I know they are upaid. Why do some some stores,as mentioned above have 90 minute total break time .Sounds like a money saving thing to me.

oldfashionedplayer

Most would rather finish early, hell I'd rather finish at half 5 than have to take breaks and finish at 7... I can just munch and drink on the shop floor... But nope, we all have to have the 90 minutes for a full shift... Checkouts is worse for their overtime, you can pick up multiple on one day, but the breaks are treated as different shifts.... Rather than just connect the shifts together,l and whatnot...

BUY TESLA STOCK

Munch and drink should be allowed it is good advert for our product and the early finish might be half a start to motivate staff.  >:D

my stores night workers work 10pm until 6:30am with 2 half an hour breaks, this was voted for by them and agreed with the store manager as it helps get cages off the shop floor early so .com can pick quicker

Just take up smoking. Fag breaks are still allowed, never been outlawed. Even more so if the managers smoke, they'll never complain if you're out socialising with them.

[gmod]Or vaping (allegedly less harmful). [/gmod]

@lucgeo Shift pattern is 10pm to 7am

lucgeo

And your contracted hours on your payslip are? If you're getting 8 hours per shift, for straight runs of 10-7 then they're paying you for the 8 hours...this may have been agreed with the night team prior to you joining, which is questionable??
If you're getting paid 7.5 hours per shift, then you're being underpaid for 30 mins per shift, which is illegal!

At our store the people who the managers are afraid to approach get to go on breaks whenever they want including having longer breaks and smoke breaks, for the rest of us they decide exactly when our breaks are and how long. It's a joke.

lucgeo

Again...added to your other posts, your breaks can be dictated as to when taken. However it must not exceed four hours between breaks in stores ( not dot.com colleagues )

The length of your breaks, is dictated by the shift you are working, as you're unpaid for that break, no one can alter your breaks to less amount than your entitlement.

If you've got a 30 min unpaid break time allowance per shift, then you/they can ask to take two 15 mins instead, however this must by mutual agreement.
