Store hours cut again

Has anyone heard anything about store hours being cut again this time due to the rise in inflation. Conference call was this morning and will find out which departments next week. So many hours have been lost since January.

madness

This is Ken Murphy's only play. He has no ideas on things to cut in store (ie 1 reduction of 80% and no mucking about skim pricing)

He only knows how to cut hours but Dave Lewis already did that with the unprofitable and very unproductive counters.

penguin

Wont be much left to cut at this rate, glad I got out when I did to be honest.
Do not let anyone tell you there is not a decent job and life beyond Tesco.

ProdavnicaTajni

Ours have been cut a lot already, I can't imagine how they'd cut it any more. It's been nice not getting texts from them to come in last minute though, I guess that's one positive.

Grizzly

Tesco is probably the only company making money during this cost of living crisis they put there bottled water up last week due to the hot weather don't tell me that was due to inflation so what else have they put up, if they want to cut costs get rid of most of the management there like dead wood. It's all about the store managers and his bosses bonuses

whatajoke2019

My MM mentioned something about overtime being cut due to people spending less but nothing about hours being removed in terms of heat maps beyond what was released a couple of weeks ago with the stock control changes.

Mind you we have had a handful of people leave recently and despite being promised they'd be replaced... nothing's happened. And then the SM wonders why our store hands over delivery cages in the morning and why the shop looks untidy  :D

rogerthedodger

Been well known for a while the plan to cut hours also as much management as possible, but done through Natural waste (make the job impossible so people leave) then back fill with hourly paid team leaders and new starters

Tenko

60 hours cut in a medium superstore per week. They've looked at everything again. Electric Master movers currently shouldn't be used on the shop floor before 10pm, they've moved this to 3pm now but taken 3 hours a week from stores.More stores will move to wait time at checkouts instead of I don't queue.  I understand we are under huge financial costs rising due to inflation but please don't continue to cut hours and expect store standards to remain and I don't queue delivered.

kaled78

our store uses the electric master movers throughout the day on the shop floor, didn't even realise such a rule was supposed to exist?

newguy20

The checkout situation is out of hand at my store for sure. Insufficient staff especially in the evenings, queues like Saturday afternoon everywhere. Customers complaining left right and centre and having a go at the cashiers who are there that they have had to wait so long. I've been asked to work overtime next week one night, I'm only doing it if they've got enough on.

lackofinterest

f*** the rules. if heavy pallets need to go out then we use the master mover. the night shift should do it in the first place

tell the whingers to go and shop elsewhere if they're not happy or better still tell them to complain to head office

Morris999

Pointless complaining to HO about wait times etc, they admitted in May they got the hours wrong with it, however since they have done the budgets for the year they would have to cut back somewhere else to fund the checkouts. And they decided they were not going to do that.

lackofinterest

if enough customers complain and tell them they are going to shop elsewhere in future then they will do something about it

yes and no. not anything due to inflation etc.. BUT just few weeks ago on a SUNDAY we had ONE TILL staff so naturally every 4 minutes we all were begged to get on the tills as the queues were... lets say i couldnt see the end and i spent 90% of my shift on the tills instead of my department...

... and yet apparently we are 500 hours OVER on tills and told we must take massive cuts to tills... yet customers number one complaint is "nobody is ever on tills and no staff are ever around"

we dont need more hours cut. im trying to up my hours as it is ... in fact theres been 0 overtime slots for months in my store in all departments.. only reason I get overtime is if someone has covid or maternity leave.

PS: forgot to mention we are a large superstore  (to point we are surprised we arent an extra yet if they removed the borded up fish counter and deli and put some other products there we will officially be an extra)

Sherwoodforest

If your 500 hours over on tills, sack the lazy ass checkout manager for not moving people around, its amazing how managers dont give a toss on the days they dont work

Checkouts, self service, scan as you shop are all different Depts. The smaller stores tend to man as if one dept. Checkouts can be over but the other areas under. The problem is probably over hours during school or office hours. It then comes down to dammed if you do and dammed if you don't. To get to the right hours colleague will need to have their hours changed, even days. You can't make anyone take on a sun so unless there is someone who is happy to move there is not a lot you can do. Then if hours are needed in the evenings you are again stuck. You either force people to move but it's again a dammed if you do or dammed if you don't. If the hours are during the day but you are short in the evenings it does not balance out, you are over hours because they are hours not needed in the afternoon. So the "lazy" checkout manager can force a whole lot of people into hours they can't or won't do.

Most stores have put people with health problems and people who have come back to work with limited availability all to checkouts. The checkout manager tends to be the manager that has to deal with the highest sick levels and the colleague that have zero flexibility. When hours were more plentiful this was less of an issue. It is now a bigger problem.

Everybody talks about rights when it comes to moving hours, and so they should, but this is how Depts end up over hours. As such a dept that has been allowed to get so over hours has had this forced upon them from high. I have recently had to move someone into hours I don't have as it was OH recommendations. I can't force anyone else to backfill the other ours so I have to suck it up. Even in these times the company is saying that as we are so big we have to find the hours, and I have. It does not mean that they were needed and I am expected now to fill the gap with overtime and it's late shifts very few will pick up.

lackofinterest

there's no incentive to work late shifts. don't blame anyone for not doing them. let h.o. knobs come in and do them >:D

lucgeo

It's not really about moving hours though, is it? It's about cutting hours...people have their hours moved, even shifts changed, for " needs of the business" but then the hours they're moving into are there because the ones who've gone, their hours were lost which resulted in not enough cover for that timeframe.
We had the SM and PP constantly tell people if they didn't like it, there's the door! The same PP that was later in floods of tears, when the PP cull arrived...they survived it and kept their job, mainly because their partner was a SM in another local store, and the majority of other PP's on the group took redundancy! I was actually asked by the SM to try to deter union members from
complaining, whilst the PP was going through a very unsettling time!!  :-X  :-X  :D  ;D

Mate, if its such a bad place to work, resign and go somewhere else, I'm sure you would moan about the next place as well.

lackofinterest

so you agree a multi billion pound company should not reward workers for working till 10 pm. in my book that is still classed as unsociable hours and should be rewarded as such. pure greed is all it boils down to! as for resigning, i don't need to  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

Has anyone heard anything yet?

I've heard stock control are changing again and loosing  hours. And no 5am starts

kaled78

strange that because we had someone from stock control moved to 5am starts last month due to heat map changes,we now have 2 that start at 5am,she previously came in at 6am

After almost a year of Tesco and the way managers are so useless, the pressure, last min shift changes, low min contract etc etc etc. I got myself a new job and left. It really is another world out there after just 2 weeks I am loving my new job, really feels like a team, the managers are lovely and supportive and actually know what they are doing. The work is interesting and I can't believe I stayed so long. Now on full time work-not a low contract and "flexed" up all the time. More money for better hours and more interesting work, and we get our rotas for 6 weeks at a time, plus proper overtime with higher rate lol. Spoke to another couple of staff members who have also got new jobs and are leaving shortly as well. So i'm with you so glad I left when I did, only seems to be getting worse and worse.
