This agreement is still in force and was in fact confirmed just recently:

Extractfrom The National Forum, held in Crewe on 21 - 22 February 2012.

QuoteFront End Agreement.

The Company are saying that the multiskilling agreement from 2005 is putting pressure on staff who work on checkouts.

The National Officer has made it clear that the Union entered into the agreement in good faith. We have never had any feedback from staff that it is unfair. What staff are not happy with is constantly being taken off their position to go on front end, which means their jobs aren't done.

There are a whole host of other issues that need to be fixed before we would consider removing this agreement.

The Front End working party has been set up to try to address issues affecting the department.

The agreement is still in place. If you started prior to the 2005 pay deal, you do not have to work on checkouts.

In a nutshell, new employees are automatically multi skilled on the checkouts as well as for the job they were employed for. Employees who have been working for Tesco since before the 2 jobs became the same grades can be cajoled, persuaded, induced, sweet talked into being multi skilled on the checkouts BUT THEY CANNOT BE FORCED TO. That is written in stone.

The rights or wrongs of whether you should be prepared to work on a checkout just because it's a shop or even whether you personally agree or disagree with it are irrelevant here. It's an agreement formally made between 2 parties and as such needs to be adhered to.

If long term employees do not object to being multi skilled then all power to them, that's cool.

New B/C grade rate effective from 3rd July 2005.
Anyone employed by Tesco before this date has the choice whether to be multiskilled.

If you are told that the agreement has been changed ask to see documents that confirm that to be so.

Addendum:
It has been posted that if you were employed before the specified date, and have been till trained, you may reasonably refuse to go on a till. This may require confirmation from a official source.
