Heating failures

Feel very sorry for customers and staff who have been forced to work/shop in very cold conditions for the past 3 weeks - having to wear heavy overcoats gloves and even woolly hats in an attempt to try and keep warm. Management not doing a lot other than indicate that to put in a new heating system would be too expensive😢😢Shameful to let staff suffer like this - especially those working long shifts with medical problems that  are aggravated by cold temps😰😰😰Anyone else had the same problems?

We got told heating was on "summer settings" and couldn't be overridden

Matrix can override the summer or winter setting for the store if required.

Get your IST and SM on the case with the H&S rep if the store is uncomfortable to work in..

We have had extra heaters fitted and this winter wasn’t too bad, the year before we all wore hats, gloves, coats and scarves, the temperature on the shop floor dropped to 3 degrees and we had to keep spraying the outdoor part of the heating system with di-iced. There answer was we don’t have the budget till next year. It was ridiculous

If you encounter a freezing store again next winter, just get a few people together to threaten a collective grievance under health and safety, two hours after a few people in our store did and heating was fixed, after being broken for around a month.

I'm 99% sure there's a health and safety law where employees have to be sent home when the work place temperature falls below or raises above a certain level.

Thanks everyone! It looks like getting H&S involved is the best way forward if the cold temps continue.

Depends how extreme it is really.

There are laws on acceptable temperatures in the work place, but it’s literally defined as “reasonable”.

Though, HSE do recommend 16 degrees for an office environment, so the persons example of 3 degrees is clearly unreasonable.

There’s no law for minimum or maximum working temperatures, eg when it’s too cold or too hot to work.

However, guidance suggests a minimum of 16ºC or 13ºC if employees are doing physical work.

There’s no guidance for a maximum temperature limit.

Employers must stick to health and safety at work law, including:

keeping the temperature at a comfortable level providing clean and fresh air

Employees should talk to their employer if the workplace temperature isn’t comfortable."

No hard and fast rule here, but according to what's quoted, the manager is responsible for maintaining a comfortable workplace temperature, not sure on what an escalation procedure regarding this would look like though.

If the temp drops too low then cold gear should be supplied the same as in a cold store.

Group grievance under Health & Safety  :question: :question:

Stores CAN alter settings via Maxtrix  if the store is excessively too hot or cold.

Anything else your told is either they genuinely don't know, or are just giving you lip service...
