Retail = Dead sector

Disagree. It seems to me that its only the non-jobs, and layers of unnecessary management that are constantly at risk ie, Compliance, HR, Customer Service Managers to name but a few. Back in the day, it didn't really matter because these giant retailers could afford to carry some dead wood. But WOW how times have changed! Most staff won't have to worry though because they'll always need the humble GA/CA  albeit on worsening contracts to do the donkey work. Yes, its not looking very promising for those who want a long term career in retail, but I've no doubt there be no shortage of dumb f***s waiting to go on Options, and it wont affect Tesco in the slightest.

Reality (or pie in the sky)
Is it not time this was stopped ?

Sainsbury’s CEO going in a few months.
Do not let anyone tell you there is not a decent job and life beyond Tesco.

Exiting store after using 'Smart shop', alarm goes off, among four bags of food shopping is two items of clothing which could have security tags (they haven't) but we stopped in case they had.

Staff(young man), have you got receipt ?
Me, I don't have to have one.
staff, but have you got one ?
Me, yes but I don't want to show it to you.
staff, we have to see the receipt
Me, if you did I would just be issued a receipt and not asked whether I wanted one or not.
staff,  I must take you back to tills
Me, how do you plan to do that, are you going to man handle me ?
staff, but the alarm went off so I need you to return into store.
Me, I repeat how do you plan to do that ?, you better fetch a MM.
( more than a few minutes waiting )
MM, do you have a receipt sir ?
Me, I may have, however you cannot challenge somebody to show something they are not require to have as the till asks me if I would like a receipt, it is obviously optional.
MM, Would anybody remember you going through the till ?
Me, I describe the person on till and inform the MM I will be outside putting our shopping in our car.
MM, returns to inform me that all is OK (which I know it was).

These tills contribute nothing to the economy, they just do people out of a job.
I bet the majority of the machine(s) is not even made in this country.

Nomad. I do hope the manager offered an apology for the inconvenience not to mention the possible embarrassment if any other customers were witness to all this going on.
Do not let anyone tell you there is not a decent job and life beyond Tesco.

Nomad

No apology.  No embarrassment caused.  They should think more deeply about some the systems and procedures that they introduce.
Even if machine or till operator issues me a receipt it is mine to do with as I wish.

"have you paid for that sir ?", the onus is on them to prove I have not. Not on me to prove I have, although I may do at a later date if so needed.

What amazes me is that the retail industry does not seem to have invested in more security over the last few years.

When bags were no longer free, I recall some department stores having more security personnel present. Even my old store had more security hours and personnel recruited...which lasted approximately 6 months, until the security guard spent most of their shift filling shelves, or tagging in the warehouse.

Now as Nomad has highlighted, no bag, no receipt, no immediate proof and no right to escort the customer back into stores whilst they ask the checkout person if they recall serving them? What if that person can't recall you??

Can of worms comes to mind  :-X

Sainsburys recently got rid of their in-store HR team and it now falls to the Store Manager to carry out HR duties such as disciplinaries, investigations, grievances, appeals etc etc, the problem with getting rid of the HR team is that it will not only effect the impartialty of any investigation, grievances or disciplinaries carried out in store but also increase the risk of successful law suits caused by process not being followed.

It’s all a mess if you ask me,sat in a let’s talk because I was asked to,managers can’t do the people side of things I basically had an argument with the manager who came across very threatening and arrogant. He had a lot to say for himself, shut up when I challenged how he was speaking to the member of staff. The company has got massive problems now I hope there are ready to be paying where their mouths are. Also had the cheek to bring up the company value treat people how they want to be treated joke.Even toss pot Lewis quoted this whole staff were being made redundant.Another joke. The union obviously are ok with the current bullying system that is suppose to be what everyone is happy with.

I've witnessed team support saying they don't care about Tesco or what tesco think out loud on shop floor
Nothing was done
The bullying as become worse over time. It's witnessed nothing done
Tesco is to good for these vile people

King1999

My advise these days is report anything you yourself would be in a lets talk or disciplinary for, they deserve the same treatment we would get.

miriam

I've experienced multiple bullying by doing this
Store management ignore instruction from above
Don't know how that works
A serious breach was made by a managers daughter. Head office told store manager to hand  it to police
They kept their job
How does that work

I went to Sainsbury's to do my shop
Found it extremely clean compared to the Tesco I work in  even though the store is at least 20 years older than the Tesco.
There deli is very well wrapped in like a large cling film unlike the Tesco I work in. Tesco's refrigerators are just with the normal blue plastic on. A breeding ground for anything and everything. On my journey around they were announcing how some people would not have a mask on and  they would need extra support. Often I heard this message. Not once have I heard this in Tesco.
Maybe this is the type of customer relations which should be concentrated on. Not the vile victimisation that is being practised.

Just what the staff can do without on an already difficult day with lockdown starting, I get there is never a good time to announce job cuts but this must be a real kick in the teeth after days of panic buying and the start of lockdown

I see they going to shut down all their counters how long before Tesco's follow suit we are already halfway there.

Welshie

Closing stand alone Argos stores and integrating them into sainsbury's stores . In doing so will no doubt only offer full-time Argos employees part-time sainsbury's contracts .

the tw*t doesn't give 2 f***s about staff or customers. all he cares about is himself and his major shareholder cronies. these fat cats are all the same. greedy selfish twats!!!

whatajoke2019

Was it not Morrison's who've axed more management roles within their stores earlier on in the year in favour of more colleagues in their bakeries/delicatessens?

Mind you, I suppose the writing was on the wall, with Sainsbury's the one up the road from me haven't reopened their counters since they closed earlier on in the year-as far as I'm aware they haven't re-opened many apart from the ones listed on their website?

I know T have introduced some Grab & Go fish counters in their stores, haven't they, wouldn't be surprised if that happens across the rest of the company before too long given it's what the 'customer' wants...  ???

lucgeo

Oh that old chestnut  8-) " it's what the customer/city wants," translated as... it's what them in their ivory towers have dreamed up, to earn themselves an arse lick  :o

Whenever that one was presented I would always reply..." I'm also a customer and a shareholder...and no one asked me ???"

Looks like changes coming to the nectar card, sounds like Sainsburys moving to a system similar to the clubcard prices Tesco have, for anyone unaware clubcard prices are offers that you only get if you present your clubcard at the tills, if not your chaarged the normal price.

Wasn't sure where to post this, it's indirectly connected to all us tesco workers,  but more pertinently for Sainsburys. They've just announced they're increasing their base pay from 950 to 10.00 per hour. More for London.

BUY TESLA STOCK

Tesco are doing same and scrapping all premiums  >:D
