Title: Will I get sick pay?
Post by: CeJay89 on 13-06-17, 08:09PM
Started working for tesco around july 2015.  Contracted 7.5 hours over 2 days.  By the time I return to work I will have taken 4 shifts off work in total.  Does this mean I will get paid? I've read in the handbook about the 3 day waiting rule.  So would I get paid for 4 days?  Or just 1?  Also how is it calculated, because as I said I'm contracted 7.5 hours but work more like 25 each week.

you will get paid for one shift 7.5 hrs ... overtime is not taking into account during sickness.

This is why they have all the new starters on flexi/low hour contracts. Saves a ton of money on sick pay.

If the person is contracted to work 7.5 hours over two days ( 3.75 hours per shift ? ) then wouldn't the sick pay be for 3.75 hours - allowing for the three day waiting rule not 7.5 hours ?.

3 day rule came in some years ago and is for full time as well as part time workers,, Its in line with SSP payments as I understand it , Yes it saves money ,  but could also be due to those that had been milking it as much as they could ,

It doesn't really save money though, I watched a documentary a few years ago and they found it didn't stop people throwing a sickie for a day as they will make hours up when it suits them, it stops people who need a few days to a week off from not coming in, those people then work less efficiently and  others sick, which when factored in ends up costing the company just as much and in some cases more.
It's absurd that our excuse for a union ever let it be implemented.

I have a different question (I'm new here and still haven't worked out how to make my own post). I have been off sick, vomiting for the past 4 days. Am I entitled to sick pay? And how much for (i.e. one of the days is overtime, and not contractual, and I have been working virtually every day this month due to short staffing, outside of my usual PT hours). Am I entitled to sick pay? I am also a 'new' worker, having been at Tesco just under 2 years.

Any help appreciated!

Hi book,

No sick pay for first 3 days I'm afraid!

Should have been explained to you in your induction, if you were off sick before??

The amount of people in stores I have known to use the sickness percentage as extra holidays, managers just as guilty.

I have a colleague in store who has had more 'sick days' then I could poke a stick at.

He even admitted they to me they are not genuine, p**ses me off, but I am no grass.

Thanks for letting me know! And I haven't been off sick before, so wasn't really aware. Would I be paid for any overtime shifts I was scheduled to do, or paid accordingly to the amount of hours I have been doing as of late?

You will only get your contracted hours in sick pay, minus the first three days.

They won't pay you for overtime not worked, and the amount of overtime hours percentage, for previously worked shifts, is only calculated on the previous ?12? weeks for holiday leave entitlement.
